Berg to command Uni's Battleship
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Monday, May 18, 2009
The director of Friday Night Lights, The Rundown and Hancock is close to stepping onboard Universal's big-screen Battleship. Yes, you lucky people, there's a movie in development based on Hasbro's legendary board game. Of course there is.
If a Battleship movie has to be made Berg is a good choice to bring something meatier to the film. He's done The Kingdom which delivered action and thrills against the political backdrop of war in the middle east. Hancock made over $200 million domestic for Sony Pictures and continued the winning streak of Will Smith. The potential bad news is for fans of Berg's other project, a new movie adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune novel; if Berg makes Battleship his next, what does that mean for his Dune movie? Is it on the backshelf now?
Screenwriting brothers Jon and Erich Hoeber have already been hired by Universal to write the Battleship movie (which I'm hoping consists of better dialog than "B-12!" and "You sank my battleship!"). The film's producers are Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir.
The Battleship movie is just one of several movies that Universal is in development on based on Hasbro board games. The other films include Candy Land, Ouija, Clue and Monopoly. Movies based on Hasbro action figures Major Matt Mason and Stretch Armstrong are also in the early phases of development.

I remember watching this on cable when I was spending the night over at an albuquerque hotel and it surely was a blast from the past. The plot was good but the special effects were a bit old-fashioned though.
