Christopher Nolan shoots down Dark Knight Rises rumors

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Thursday, December 2, 2010

No, there won't be a cameo of Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight Rises. Yes, Christopher Nolan is planning on his third Batman movie wrapping up all that he has to say about the character. And no, he won't tell you what character Tom Hardy is playing in the sequel.

As I said two weeks back, whenever the tiniest Batman rumor gets mentioned on the web, the news travels hard and fast. I've laid off writing up these rumors soon after they break as I personally think they're bunk and don't have any merit, and Nolan is doing a decent job of shooting them down when he's asked by a member of the geek press.

Amy Dawes of Thompson on Hollywood attended the Inception DVD release party and asked Nolan to lift his shotgun and get the official shoot-down of these latest Batman 3 rumors. And that he did. The bulletpoints:

  • He's working on the script for The Dark Knight Rises right now, writing it with his brother Jonathan. They're doing most of the writing in a trailer park in Malibu.
  • Warner Bros. is expecting to read the first draft next month.
  • Nolan said that Tom Hardy is playing "a key role" in the movie but wouldn't confirm whether Hardy's character will be a good guy or a villain.
  • He will not use any leftover footage of Heath Ledger's Joker from The Dark Knight in the third movie. "That's all wrong," was Nolan's quote on the matter.

The source of The Dark Knight Rises being Nolan's final Batman film comes from a new interview with Entertainment Weekly. "I must say that I'm glad — I'm very, very glad — to be embarking on the last chapter of our Batman saga without any sense of obligation or duty to the studio," he's quoted by the periodical as saying. When asked if he would be more hoping to make another original idea like Inception instead of a third trip to Gotham City, the director said, "No, it's exactly the opposite. I feel very glad that I'm doing another Batman film. I think it would have been daunting to sit down and write an original script after Inception. I love working within the realm and rules of our Batman world. It's kind of nice to have someplace to go that I'm super-excited about."

Wouldn't it be great if Nolan were to alternate between making a new Batman movie and something new and fresh? Wouldn't it be terrific if he could not just make two or even three great Batman movies but went on to make a trilogy of Batman movie trilogies over the course of the next 15 or so years? He could show Bruce Wayne in his 30s, then move on to showing the character evolve and include Robin in his crime fighting. (Oh come on -- do you think that a guy like Christopher Nolan couldn't find a way to make Robin work in the Batman movie Nolanverse?) And then 20 or so years down the road Nolan and Bale could make their final Batman movie: The Dark Knight Returns.

Well, it's just an idea...

Will this one be the one where I finally like the costume?

Thursty, these movies are made for me, not you. I laughed yesterday when I saw a story at Dark Horizons about how Nolan has handed off the new Superman movie entirely to Snyder, and Nolan will now be focusing his attention entirely on his third Batman movie, but I'm really quite excited to have Nolan making one more and then walking away. I'd rather have him focus his attention on that, than try to also steer the Superman movie. I really like his quote about not feeling any obligation to the studio (the other article I read had slightly more about this; can't remember how directly it was from Nolan's quote, or it if it the author's interpretation, but that article claimed Nolan felt the success of TDK and 'Inception' filled the dollar quota. Of course, TDKR will do fine at the box office; the first crap film in a series survives on the goodwill of the previous films. See X-3 for example).

Reading the title of this article, and hoped (and yes, prayed) that Nolan shooting down Dark Knight Rises rumors meant that we were at last free of that horrible title.

He should call it 'The Dark Knight Falls'.  Cause night falls.  The moon rises.  The sun also rises.  Maybe 'Dark Sun Rises' would've been good.  Anyway, the title probably should've been the first clue that Nolan was no longer concerned about the franchise making money.

He could call it "The Dark Cash Pile Rises".

My main problem with is it that it sounds dumb. Also, it sounds generic, like one of those fucking Transformers sequels. And "Rises" doesn't really correlate with Batman in general, with a third movie in a trilogy (sounds more like a first movie), or a concluding movie in a series. Maybe if he'd been buried alive at the end of the last movie, I could see it for this one.

I think it would've been been cool if they had gone with the 'Shadow of the Bat' title that was rumored (I'm sure it didn't come from Nolan, or anything) a couple of years ago.  It doesn't matter if it really ties in directly!  It's plenty vague that it doesn't matter!  Plus, it would keep with their model of not using the same terms in any of the titles for the movies.  'The Dark Knight Rises' is bizarrely similar to 'The Dark Knight', after the first two movie titles had nothing in common.

Also, I'm ignoring Thursty's insolence.

I'm with Jack onthis.  I also thought (and still do) that "The Dark Knight Rises" sounds like a working title.  I am hoping against hope that they change it when the script comes together.

I suppose if they used "Knight Fall" people with either assume they are using the Bane storyline and it doesn't sound like the trilogy ends well.  If they use "Batman Triumphant" then it's a bit Burton/Schumacher.

Speaking of the end, can anyone else actually see the story ending really badly for Bruce Wayne?  In this world Nolan has created around Batman, there really isn't much scope for getting a boy wonder sidekick, developing the Batman Family and living happily ever after as the Caped Crusader.

....says "Kill Bond, NOW!"
