Columbia Pictures has picked up the film rights to Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, a Sony Computer Entertainment video game released in 2007 for that company PlayStation 3 console. Kyle Ward, who just landed another gamerflick assignment earlier this week by writing the screenplay for Hitman 2, will also pen the adaptation for Uncharted.
Producing are former Marvel Studios president Avi Arad, his brother Ari, Charles Roven (The Dark Knight, Get Smart) and Alex Gartner (Indecent Propsal, Get Smart).
The game is an action-adventure about a treasure hunter who's a modern day descendant of legendary explorer Sir Francis Drake who's after the lost city of El Dorado. Chasing after the hero is another treasure hunter and a journalist. Mysterious mutants, jungle dangers and deadly gunplay follow. Sony sold 1 million copies of the game within three months of its November 2007 launch and many critics gave Uncharted great review scores, comparing the game's production level and storyline to a big-budget Hollywood movie. A sequel called Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is in development.
