Creed II Will Happen, But Will Apollo Have His Comeback In It?

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, January 5, 2016

Creed II is happening. This is fact: Sylvester Stallone said so today. And it's a no-brainer because of the success of the first movie, with $103 million domestic on a $30 mil budget.

The question now is: what will Creed II be about? Will Adonis Creed do what Rocky did in his first sequel and win the championship? And will it be a rematch or against a new opponent?

Stallone and Creed director Ryan Coogler have been gestating on ideas over the Christmas break. As the actor told Variety, one idea would return Carl Weathers to the big screen and reprise his role as Adonis' father, Apollo Creed. Weathers seems to be up for it, both emotionally and physically, says Sly. Whether this would be a de-aging thing like what was done to Michael Douglas in last year's Ant-Man, or some sort of creative interpretation of the ghost of Apollo it open for speculation. But since Stallone says this Creed II idea would move both back and forth in time, I'm guessing it would be before Apollo fought his last boxing match against Ivan Drago in 1985's Rocky IV.

The big number in this sequel's equation is the availability of Ryan Coogler. Creed's success has him in demand, and he's talking with the peeps at Marvel Studios about directing the Black Panther movie scheduled for release in the summer of 2018. If he takes that job, Coogler is booked for the next couple of years, pushing back Creed II if he were to direct it.

However, if Coogler were to step back and take a producer role on Creed II, then the door is open for a different director. If that's what everyone wants.

"Do we work with another director and have Ryan produce, or do we wait?" is the question that Sylvester Stallone asked today to a reporter, and it's a big one that you can bet the people at MGM and New Line Cinema are discussing right now. With that idea in mind, pay attention to what Stallone said next: "There’s a diminishing time acceptance of a sequel. Now they are cranking them out in a year."

Creed II is going to happen with or without Ryan Coogler.
