Disney CEO confirms Avengers 2 is a go
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, May 8, 2012
It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone on this planet that there will be a sequel to The Avengers. When any movie opens and sets a new record for its opening weekend, thoughts of a sequel should follow.
Even so, it does mean something when the president of the movie studio cements the obvious by saying publicly that a sequel is inevitable. "The Avengers isn't just a film," said Robert Iger, the CEO of The Walt Disney Company/parent company of Marvel Comics and The Avengers. "It's a franchise from our perspective. Obviously, it was helped a lot by the success of the Iron Man movies and of Thor and Captain America. From The Avengers we get a chance to make Thor 2 and Captain America 2 and Iron Man 3 and hopefully another Avengers movie. So this one film that is immensely successful... is going to get a number of other films and franchises."
Iger said this today on MSNBC, so it's being picked up and carried across all media. With Avengers hype now hitting its critical mass, any mention of a sequel is setting off seismic ripples. Still, aside from deals that the studio has with several of the Avengers cast members, there's currently no deal for director/screenwriter Joss Whedon to come back and write/call the shots for The Avengers 2. Yet.
Marvel has announced a release date for Iron Man 3 in May 2013 and Thor 2 for November of that year, and then in 2014 there are two (at present) undisclosed films set for release. Captain America 2 has also got a release date (April 4, 2014) but in addition to these sequels there are plans for Marvel to release two other undisclosed movies in 2014 (one is set for May 16.) Could one of these movies be Avengers 2? Perhaps, but I'm a believer that Marvel will need more time to develop the foundation for the Avengers sequel (as well as strike a deal for Robert Downey Jr. to play Tony Stark/Iron Man again, if they can afford him.)
Iger didn't drop any hints. "We have an ability to leverage what was a very fun film done by a great group of filmmakers into something much bigger for the company," he said on the news network, "and the effect will be prolonged and that's very, very exciting for us."
At least we now know that Avengers 2 plans are definitely afoot.
