Spec'd: Marvel's The Avengers DVD

Arriving on September 26, 2012 on home video is Marvel's The Avengers, the highest-grossing superhero movie of all-time and present third-highest grossing movie ever. Paramount Home Video is handling the home video release of the film (as per their agreement with Walt Disney, the owners/theatrical distribution studio.)

The Avengers will have three disc versions: a 4-disc Blu-ray, a 2-disc Blu-ray DVD and a single-disc DVD. Perhaps the most important bonus feature listed on the discs will be an audio commentary track by screenwriter/director Joss Whedon, so expect a lot of comic book geeking out when you pop that one on the player.

Titanic 2 is coming soon

If you're familiar at all with the direct-to-video efforts of The Asylum, then you know that their revenue model is built on cashing in from the media hype of the current movie blockbuster. When Transformers was about to come out in movie theaters, The Asylum was there to release Transmorphers. When the last High School Musical was almost here, The Asylum gave us Sunday School Musical. I like to think that Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus was a wholly original creation by The Asylum brain trust.

Star Wars Blu-rays and the return of Luke Skywalker

It was inevitable that sometime Lucasfilm would get around to confirming that a Blu-ray special edition of all six Star Wars movies is being worked on. That confirmation finally arrived this past weekend at the Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) from Steve Sansweet, the company's director of publicity.

Twilight: New Moon DVD sells 4 million copies

If early sales figures are any indication then Summit Entertainment's New Moon DVD will sell slightly better than the first Twilight disc. Sales figures have been tallied and according to the results 4 million DVDs of New Moon were sold beginning at midnight Sunday and in a 24 hour period.

DVD Review: The Princess and the Frog

The first traditionally animated feature film from Disney since 2002's Home on the Range (and more importantly to little girls, the first to feature a new Disney princess since 1998's Mulan), The Princess and the Frog is a well crafted return to this cherished form of animation. While the film has its flaws and isn't playing on the same level of Beauty and the Beast or Sleeping Beauty, it's a step above more recent Disney 'toons like Hercules or Tarzan.

Spec'd: Avatar

This morning 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment announced that it will release Avatar, the world's highest-grossing movie of all-time, onto DVD and Blu-ray on April 22, 2010. The date is intentional by Fox because it will mark the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, thus tying into Avatar's ecological themes.

Netflix agrees to delay rental of Warner Bros. DVDs

Netflix has reached an agreement with Warner Bros. which will see the online DVD rental company stop offering new WB DVD and Blu-ray releases to its customers for the first four weeks of release. The studio hopes that the decision by Netflix will mean its sales of new discs will stop trending downward and reverse course as upwards of 75% of its revenue from DVD sales is made in a title's first four weeks of release.

Spec'd: Zombieland

On February 2, 2010 Sony Pictures Home Entertainment streets Zombieland, their comedy/horror about what happens when the dead take over this joint we call life. As Sony reminded us in their press release sent out today, "Zombieland is the number one grossing zombie movie in history." It seems that the dead really have taken over the earth, as shortly they'll have home video.

Transformers sequel has big DVD sales

To no one's surprise, in its first week of release on DVD Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen leapt up to the top of the home video charts. However, Paramount bean counters are especially happy as the sequel sold 7.5 million DVD/Blu-ray copies in its first seven days of release.

Spec'd: District 9

After becoming one of this summer's sweetest success stories, Neill Blomkamp's sci-fi drama District 9 will be released by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on December 29, 2009. Starring Sharlto Copley as a naive South African civil government employee assigned to oversee the relocation of insect-like extraterrestrials living in slums, District 9 minted both the actor and its director as up-and-coming stars within the Hollywood scene. The movie made $115 million dollars domestic during its theatrical run.
