Universal hooks Merman

Jennifer Abu Hollander has sold a script entitled Merman. Can you guess what it's about? "Tuna of the sea" is not the correct answer. Neither is that fishy bad guy in Skeletor's rogues gallery from your He-Man and the Masters of the Universe action figure collection. Nor is it a movie biography about singer Ethel Merman.

Lionsgate snacking on The Hunger Games

Screen rights for Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games have been gobbled up by Saw studio Lionsgate. Former Walt Disney president of production Nina Jacobson and her Color Force production company will shepherd the project's development for the mini-major.

J.J. gets wired to Paramount heist pic

J.J. Abrams has a new movie project to produce, if not direct if he chooses to do so. Set up at Paramount Pictures and being developed by Abrams' Bad Robot production company, the as-yet untitled film will be based on a forthcoming article by Wired reporter Joshua Davis.

Efron's up for Jonny Quest

If you heard the reports that Dwayne Johnson wanted to play Race Bannon in a live-action Jonny Quest movie, the ex-WWE superstar also namedropped High School Musical's Zac Efron as the leading candidate to play the title character. Jason director decides to walk with RKO's Zombie

The Roseblood Movie Company and Twisted Pictures blew the dust off of RKO's classic chiller I Walked With a Zombie two months ago when they announced plans to remake the 1943 film. Now they've decided on a director, one with a horror pedigree, namely Jason Goes to Hell director Adam Marcus.

Get a Goon's eye view

Eric Powell's comic book The Goon is in the process of getting turned into a CG animated flick by Dark Horse Entertainment and Blur Studios. Debuting 10 years ago this month, Powell's crime noir-meets-action/comedy follows the exploits of a mob heavy and his scrawly pal Frankie as they get into brawls involving both criminals and monsters.
