Paramount's relaunch of Star Trek got a major blast off on its first day in release. Early Friday results peg that the eleventh Trek took in $31 million dollars on its opening day factoring in $7 million bucks from early Thursday and Friday midnight screenings.
That's far and away the best day ever for a Star Trek film and the movie is easily on track for at least a $70 million dollar weekend. Comparibly the Trek franchise has always been a moderate earner for the studio with only one former Star Trek movie ever grossing north of $100 million dollars domestic at the box office, 1986's Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
Last weekend's champ, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, raked in another $8.5 million last night. That's a 75% drop from the same day one week earlier.

Going to the theatre to see it in about two hours with a group of 8. Hope it is as good as all the critics say.
