First look at Thor in costume

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Friday, April 30, 2010

Here it is: the first photo of Chris Hemsworth playing Marvel's god of thunder, the mighty Thor.

Yahoo was given the exclusive and ran the photo early this morning. My first impression of Hemsworth and his costume is good: he looks somewhat -- but not completely -- in line with what a blonde-haired Norse godling should look like. As for the costume, it seems to be fairly faithful to the look that Thor sports in the Marvel comics.

As far as first looks go, Marvel and Paramount didn't chose a bad photo. I have a sneaky suspiscion that the companies might not have wanted to show their hand this early but with Latino Review's publication of the look of The Destroyer, one of Thor's villains, they might have felt that if they weren't the first to show the world what Thor looks like in his movie, someone else will -- and in a way that they cannot control.

I'm certain that a better image will come out, one showing Hemsworth looking at the camera, wearing his armored cap with its signature tiny white wings and gripping the handle of his magical hammer, Mjolnir.

What do you think? Sound off in the comments section below on your opinion!

I think it looks good. I'm curious to see what the rest of the costume looks like, but the shoulder area looks good.

Not a very big dude is he. Every Superhero in movies like this should be built like Patrick Warburton IMHO

Mmm...looks like they are a little too true to the comic costume. Is that sleeve painted on? Spandex?

the round thing on his shoulder is supposed to hide everything that is holding his cape on, in this case (or maybe from this angle) its too small and so theres two black "clips" that show up holding his cape..

still a very faithful costume for Thor, i think I remember seeing him in an old Bill Bixby Incredible Hulk movie and they just did whatever they wanted... and that looked horrible...

this... very good looking costume and very faithful.

Iron Man was fairly easy to explain, as was The Hulk. Introducing Thor into the same universe already established by the aforementioned super types is going to be a hard sell; neither Shellhead nor Hulk have entire pantheons of fellow godlings or ties to established mythology.

All in all, not looking bad so far, but I'm worried about that hammer looking too much like a prop.
