Four SNLers and the King of Queens walk into a bar...
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Wednesday, February 11, 2009
Sandler, Spade, Schneider, Rock and James. No, it's not a new folk band out on the tour circuit but five leading comedic actors who are all in talks to star in the same movie together.
The full names of the five are Adam Sandler, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Chris Rock and Kevin James. Aside from the last guy, all four starred together on Saturday Night Live back in the late '80s-early '90s. Sandler's production company, Happy Madison, produced Spade's Dickie Roberts movie as well as Schneider's two Deuce Bigelow flicks and James' Paul Blart movie, so there's a solid business relationship history already established.
The untitled comedy is stationed at Columbia Pictures where Adam has a deal at and already has Dennis Dugan lined up to direct it. Dugan's an old buddy of Sandler's and also helmed his last movie, You Don't Mess with the Zohan. The script is already done by Sandler and Fred Wolf, the guy that penned the Dickie Roberts movie.
So what's the movie's story? According to Variety it's about five best friends who've known each other since high school getting the chance to hang out on the Fourth of July weekend. Oh yeah, and Variety calls this idea "high concept" too (whatever that means these days.)
packing more SNL alumnis into one flick wont make it any better, I'm still not convinced ANY of these guys could save a movie with a shitty script and a crappy director.
sure they all are witty when the writers are good but Deuce Bigelo and Dickie Roberts arent even funny
I'm so sick of Adam Sandler and most of the SNL cast. Sure he was good in Airheads, Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore. But think of how many horrible movies he's been in with the same stupid Adam Sandler acting. The last thing I enjoyed him even mildly in was Anger Management. But that was what 5 or 6 years ago? People like him, David Spade, Mike Myers and Schneider need to stop pouncing on all these horribly written cliche movies every chance they get. I mean, Zohan and Love Guru were probably two of the worst comedies to come out in who knows how long.
I will say this though, I think Kevin James is pretty funny. I hate family sitcoms, but King of Queens always made me laugh. If you've seen his stand up you'll know what I mean. His mannerisms are just funny and he can make people laugh with even the worst script.
I liked Zohan but I'm not adding it to my dvd collection (I usually avoid comedies). On the flip side, I hated Little Nicky... it wasnt the content of the movie (satan's son on earth) it was Sandler's voice that did it for me... I mean COME ON if Rodney Dangerfield wasnt perfect casting for Lucifer himself!
