Fright Night remake refuses to stay dead
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Thursday, May 14, 2009
After Screen Gems failed to get a remake of the 1985 horror film Fright Night off the ground now DreamWorks is giving its best shot at it. The movie studio has tapped former New Line Cinema president of development Michael De Luca to help produce the new film along with Michael Gaeta and Alison Rosenzweig. No screenwriter is yet attached.
The original Fright Night became a surprise hit when it came out late in the summer of 1985. Written and directed by Tom Holland, the film was a mixture of comedy and scares that told the story of a teenage boy named Charlie Brewster that discovered his new next door neighbor was a vampire. After not finding any support from the adults he knows, Brewster recruits the former late-night television host of a local horror program to his cause. Together the two men become unlikely vampire hunters and team up to rid the neighborhood of the undead menace.
A sequel followed in 1988 but failed to capture the spark contained in the original movie. Twenty years ago Now Comics published a Fright Night comic book series which lasted for 22 issues.
