The first movie is basically The Hobbit, right? The second movie is some lame tie-in to LOTR?

Hobbit release dates, titles announced
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, May 31, 2011
It was a slow Memorial Day for genre news save for a small kernel of knowledge handed to us by New Line Cinema and MGM. The mini-studio chose to announce its release dates for the two Hobbit movies that are presently filming in Wellington, New Zealand.
Set 60 years before the events chronicled in The Lord of the Rings, the two films feature a host of new actors as well as returning faces from Peter Jackson's Middle-earth trilogy. Playing the central role of hobbit Bilbo Baggins when he was a middle-aged adventurer is Martin Freeman (Sherlock). Ian Holm is returning to play the older Bilbo again in a pair of bookend scenes where he tells his tale to Frodo (Elijah Wood, also returning.) Hugo Weaving is coming back to play elf king Elrond; Cate Blanchett is stepping again into the shoes of elf queen Galadriel; Orlando Bloom is back as elfen archer Legolas; Christopher Lee is Saurman the White (being a good guy); Ian McKellen is Gandalf the Grey (before he was a White wizard); and Andy Serkis is playing Gollum once again.
The first Hobbit movie is now titled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and will be released on December 14, 2012. The second film comes out nearly a year later to the day, on December 13, 2013, and will be titled The Hobbit: There and Back Again.
Peter Jackson is directing both films from screenplays written by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and himself.
Quasar: Jackson is splitting Tolkien's book somewhere around the middle, so the 2nd movie is just the 2nd half of THE HOBBIT. There is a little bit of original stuff but the majority is all drawn from the novel.
