Ice Age ties with Transformers at the box office

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, July 5, 2009

The prehistoric mammals and alien transformers are in a tie. Box office forecasts for the Independence Day weekend have Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen tied with each film taking in $42.5 million dollars each. The third Ice Age opened on Wednesday and its five-day total now stands at $67.5 million dollars while the Transformers sequel has taken in $293 million dollars in 12 days.

Universal's Public Enemies debuted in third place with $26.1m bringing its five-day cume to $41m -- a decent opening for a movie that's earned mixed reviews.

In its third weekend out The Proposal is still doing solid box office, adding an additional $12.7m to its run to land in fourth spot. The Sandra Bullock/Ryan Reynolds romantic comedy now stands with a $94 million dollar run.

Warner Bros.' The Hangover just cracked the $200m barrier. With another $10.4m added this weekend The Hangover has now earned $204,197,000 in its five weekends in release. Not too shabby for a comedy that cost the studio just $35 million.

Disney's Up came in sixth spot ($6.5 million, total $264.8 million), My Sister's Keeper is in seventh place ($5.2m / total $25.9m), Sony's The Taking of Pelham 123 is at eighth position ($2.5m / total $58.4m) and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and Year One also tied for ninth place with $2.1 million dollars grossed each. Paramount's Star Trek dropped from eighth place last weekend to eleventh this long weekend; with another $1.8 million in ticket sales the movie has earned $249.8 million dollars after its two month dominance in the top 10.
