Universal Pictures is developing a period action piece entitled 47 Ronin for Keanu Reeves to star in. As reported by Variety, the movie is set in the 18th century and will see The Day the Earth Stood Still actor play a member of a group of Japanese swordsmen who avenge the murder of their master.
Scott Stuber (Role Models, The Break-Up) will produce the movie from a screenplay by Chris Morgan (Wanted) while Walter Hamada and Chris Fenton will be executive producers. Morgan is currently reshaping Reeves' character to reflect the actor's mixed caucasian/asian heritage. The search is on to find a director and have the movie filming in 2009.
Variety further states that the movie will heighten its style by incorporating fantasy elements into it, specifically citing The Lord of the Rings movies with the battle realism scenes found in Gladiator.
