Movie producer Don Murphy (Transformers, From Hell) tells Shock Till You Drop that a director has been found for We3, the adaptation of the DC Comics/Vertigo comic book series and it's John Stevenson, the guy behind DreamWorks' Kung Fu Panda. While Stevenson made a lateral move in terms of the kind of furry characters he'll be seeing, We3 is light years removed from the family oriented animated story that Panda offered.
Written by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Frank Quietly, We3 was originally a three-issue series published in 2005 intended for mature audiences. It followed the escape of three animals, a dog, a cat and a rabbit, who were made test subjects in a top secret military experiement designed to create battlefield soldiers. The animals were augmented with cybernetic implants that gave them boosted intelligence as well as the ability for limited speech, as well as placed inside an armored exoskeleton outfitted with an array of devastating weapons. After escaping from the military facility the trio attempt to find their way back to their homes all the while being pursued by soldiers as well as a different animal with the same weaponry.
"We're doing it as an R-rating," Murphy told the website. "It's not going to be cutesy. There's killer rabbits and stuff."
The project was originally set up at New Line Cinema but the studio has placed it in turnaround, leaving the property free to be plucked by another studio. "We're in the process right now of trying to figure out where we're going to make it," remarked Murphy.
