Full Metal Panic? Is that a sequel to Full Metal Jacket? Manga fans, you know better than to ask that question.
First broadcast in 1998 and with sequels and spinoffs pushing the number of episodes in the franchise to over 100, the series' premise sounds ludicrous but fans of the show praise the series for how it combines high school antics, teenage romance, a sprinkle of magic and that staple of the genre, robotic powered armor. Only in Japan, right? Well that's not what Mandalay Pictures believes because they've scooped up the movie rights to Full Metal Panic and hope to make a western movie out of it.
The manga's two main characters are an anti-terrorist soldier named Sousuke Sagara who is charged with protecting a feisty girl by the name of Kaname Chidori. Both attend high school and that's where the dangers lie, both from mean-spirited students as well as bad guys out to take out Kaname. It's teenage fantasy where the guy is a hero with big guns, the heroine wears a school girl outfit and there's no adults supervision. Oh my God, it's starting to appeal to me!
The Hollywood Reporter states that the one and only Zac Efron has supposedly taken a meeting about the property but that might not mean too much if rumors about the High School Musical star wanting to broaden his image away from teen characters is accurate, or if Efron wants to make Jonny Quest one of his future projects before facial hair starts coming in.
