Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell in talks for Iron Man 2

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Wednesday, January 7, 2009

Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell are both in talks to star in Iron Man 2. Depending on which trade magazine you're reading, Rourke may be up for the role of Crimson Dynamo or Whiplash, both villains to ol' shellhead.

Variety is reporting (and hinting) Rourke may be the Crimson Dynamo because they heard the character is "Tony Stark's Russian alter ego, a heavily tattooed bruiser who is in the arms trade and battles Iron Man in his own nuclear-powered armored suit." That sounds like the Dynamo to us.

The Hollywood Reporter states that they know Rourke would "play a tattooed Russian heavy named Ivan who becomes Whiplash, a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coils." Obviously there's a difference in opinion between the two rival Hollywood news magazines but at least both of them agree Rourke's supervillain's ethnicity is Russian.

Reporter also scores another point for breaking that Sam Rockwell (Choke, Galaxy Quest, the upcoming Moon) is also in talks to play Justin Hammer, a rival wealthy industrialist to Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark. The magazine also says that the show is also casting for the role of Natasha, described as an assistant to Stark. Gwyneth Paltrow is returning in the sequel as Pepper Potts, who was Tony's assistant in the first film. Whether Stark is getting a new P.A., a new one or THR got their wires crossed and the "Natasha" in question is the Black Widow (whose real name is Natasha Romanoff, a Russian ex-KGB spy) remains unknown.

Iron Man 2 starts filming this spring.

OMG! What a conundrum who's it gonna be? Maybe Mickey Rourke is pulling an Eddie Murphy and will be playing multiple characters in the film. Guaranteed one of them is a very crazy person.

It would be nice if they toned down the CGI in this one and actually come up with a story!

I keep my standards low, that way im never dissapointed

There was nothing wrong with the story in the first one. It wasn't the most complicated plot, but it was very enjoyable.

Too much story can pollute a comic book movie. Look at the first Hulk. I hope IM2 keeps par with the original, one of the funnest movies in years!

I just did not get what the hype over Iron Man was. Yes, it had some good CGI, Yes Downey kicks ass....other then that...well, I just thought it was ok...

Too much story can not kill a comic book movie, too much CGI kills the movie for me. I understand the need to use it but when it feels like I am watching a CGI animated movie with live action characters instead.....yeah.....

GD, there have been numerous live action incarnations of BATMAN, Captain America, Spiderman, Superman, Hulk and more but...

One thing Iron Man had that the others didnt have... Iron Man had never been done before. Moreover, for its first live action outing... it looked damn near perfect for a movie character everybody thought was impossible to adapt properly.

remember watching the trailers for X-men (another movie that had never been attempted before?) and we all cringed when we saw the black leather uniforms? But it WORKED.
Iron Man have very little alterations/modifications to the look of the central three characters (from the comics) and no changes to the actual suit at all. and then throwing Sam Jackson in as Nick Fury just for the fans was just icing on top of the sundae.

Fact is, since nobody had ever attempted an Iron Man movie before, John Favereu massively hit the ball out of the ballpark - did they do that with Fantastic Four? no. Did tey do that with Ghost Rider? NO. Did they do that with Man-Thing or Howard the Duck? HELL NO!

Iron Man was an unexpected hit on an untested character (in the live-action world of movies)

Well, rebooting the Batman franchise has only improved the character and those that remember it all thought that Tim Burton's 1989 Batman kicked major ass twenty years ago, right?

I'm just saying thats my theory, for a long time Iron Man was thought to be impossible to adapt correctly, it had never been done before and when John did it... it didnt outright suck nuts like Ghost Rider did.

thats my theory and i'm stickin to it.
