Moon director going underwater for new film
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, June 2, 2009
Moon director Duncan Jones now has two new projects to keep him busy as he awaits the release of his first film, the science fiction tale Moon. Jones just got hooked up to make a movie called Escape From the Deep, a submarine thriller based on a real life event from World War 2.
During the war the U.S. Navy sub USS Tang was accidentally struck by one of its own torpedos and sunk to the bottom of the Pacific. As Japanese forces patrolled above the surface dropping depth charges to shake up the American vessel, the crew of the grounded sub only had one shot at survival: open the hatch and hold their breath long enough to swim the 180 feet to the surface.
The movie will be written by Alex Kershaw, the same fellow that also penned the non-fiction book about the incident. British film development company Brilliant Films is bankrolling the movie with the company's Joe Abrams and Rory Gilmartin to produce. The film is expected to lens sometime in 2010.
"Having been fascinated by submarine films like Das Boot and Crimson Tide, it's a really unique opportunity to tell an amazing story like this that is actually true," Jones told Variety about his new flick.
Before Jones goes off to make his submarine movie he'll be returning to the realm of science fiction with Mute, his follow-up to Moon. "This is a bigger, more commercial film than Moon, although it is another science fiction project," the director told the trade. "It's a thriller set in Berlin in the future." Jones wrote the screenplay for Mute and is currently casting the film now.
