Mortal Kombat concept video raises questions and shows fatalities
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, June 8, 2010

Mortal Kombat fans are wondering what the reasons are for a slick looking short film that reboots the movie spinoff franchise as a hard-edge actioner. The short has Hollywood level stars, fight choreography, editing and direction. The big question is: was this Mortal Kombat video done as a test for an R-rated movie reboot or is it the next step in the video game's evolution?
The video was uploaded to YouTube yesterday and then first given wider exposure earlier today by Kotaku, a gaming website. Forget the two 1990s Mortal Kombat movies and see what this fresh cinematic take at video game's most violent brawler looks like:
Latino Review then came in with a rundown of which stars appear in the video:
Jax: Michael Jai White
Sonya Blade: Jeri Ryan
Scorpion: Ian Anthony Dale
Baraka: Lateef Crowder
Johnny Cage: Matt Mullins
LR also claims that the Mortal Kombat short was directed by Kevin Tancharoen, last year's helmer on the Fame remake, and that it was created as a test concept for Warner Bros. to see what a R-rated Mortal Kombat movie would feel like. The fight choreography was created by Larnell Stovall (Undisputed III).
So, what now? Who uploaded the video to YouTube, and what was their reason? What did Warner Bros. think of the concept video? And what happens now with the Mortal Kombat movie reboot plans?

Dude. That was a really cool short. Mortal Kombat isn't any sort of high concept drama. Mortal Kombat is about a bunch of dudes and dudettes, some with wild abilities kicking the shit out of each other and pulling out their spines and hearts and beating someone to death with his or her own leg.
That said, the short seems to be grounding itself more in "reality," or at least ditching the concept of Outworld given the origin of Reptile. Michael Jai White is fucking awesome. Let me say that right now.
