Movie webmasters wrestle down a Hollywood movie

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Among the new movie projects and bits of casting news being announced today there is one story of special note to the movie news site community: two website writers/owners are also serving as movie producers on a new superhero movie with supernatural elements to it. The title of the film is El Zombo Fantasma and the two guys involved with its creation are IESB's Robert Sanchez and Latino Review's Kellvin Chavez.

It's based on a comic book that came out in 2005 that was created by David Wilkins and Kevin Munroe. The title is also the name of a Mexican wrestler who, after he's murdered, returns from Hell to serve as the guardian angel of a Los Angeles teenage girl. The pairing proves to be a difficult one because Zombo is prone to an explosive temperment and there are larger forces of fate working behind the scenes.

Munroe will write the screenplay and direct the feature as well as have a co-producer credit along with Wilkins. Sanchez and Chavez, our online boys, have full producer credit along with Chris Patton. The film will be a co-production between Death Ray Films, a company formed by Munroe, Patton and Sanchez, and Maya Entertainment (run by Jose Martinez who will also be a producer.) Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Entertainment will executive produce.

The Hollywood Reporter states that El Zombo Fantasma is being called a "Latino Hellboy" by its creators who also want to have the character have a broader appeal.

This is Sanchez's second movie project, his first being the action/sci-fi movie War Monkeys which is slated to commence filming this spring.

"As a Cuban-American in this industry, I see El Zombo as a unique property that will not only showcase Latinos but also appeal to all audiences. It has action, romance, redemption and wrestling, it's a Latin Hellboy," says Robert Sanchez. "It's the perfect date movie!"

"El Zombo is an extremely cool superhero and it's tremendous, pile-driving fun," adds Kellvin Chavez, whose website Latino Review had the teaser poster artwork. "As a fan of wrestling, I used to watch 'Santo, el Enmascarado de Plata' one of the most famous Mexican free wrestlers, so I was excited by this project."

well, we've all been chomping at the bit for more original ideas to come from hollywood,(or have we been complaning loudly about those pesky remakes, sequels and prequels?) lets NOT overlook War Monkeys and El Zombo Fantasma as they both sound like original ideas... and Hollywood needs more of those so I'm in favor of both of these!
I'll support Kellvin and Robert... you go guys...

Now Patrick.. when is YOUR "Corona: The Movie" movie coming out? LOL! GET TO WORK! haha!

Whatever happened with Garth Franklin's Dark Horizons movie? Didn't he get the name for his site from a script he had written/was writing?
