Actress Natasha Richardson has died as a result of a head injury that happened while she was skiing. The 45-year-old Richardson had been flown to a New York hospital yesterday and had been surrounded by her family and friends. It was decided earlier today by Richardson's family to remove her from life support.

Late this afternoon the family of Natasha Richardson made the announcement of her passing.

"Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha," said spokesman Alan Nierob for the family.

"They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone and ask for privacy during this very difficult time."

Richardson sustained a head injury while taking part in skiing lessons two days ago at a Quebec ski resort. While she didn't report any major pain or expressed any serious concerns about her health, the Handmaid's Tale actress was taken to a doctor and then to a hospital where her medical condition became more serious. As early as yesterday unconfirmed reports began to circulate across the blogosphere and tabloids that she was brain dead. It was reported that Richardson was not wearing a helmet at the time of her head injury but that's not unusual for the vast majority of skiing participants.

She is survived by her husband, actor Liam Neeson, two teenage sons, her mother Vanessa Redgrave and sister Joely Richardson.
