Screenwriter Joe Gazzam has been hired to work on the latest iteration of sci-fi heroine Barbarella, this time for director Robert Luketic.
The remake is no longer set up at Universal Pictures. Two years back it was under the creative guidance of Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids, Planet Terror) who pictured his girlfriend Rose McGowan in the lead role. A script by frequent James Bond scripters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade had been commissioned but failed to get off the ground.
The Luketic version also has the involvement of the original 1968 film's producer Dino De Laurentiis. Martha De Laurentiis, Dino's wife, is also producing.
The new Barbarella idea is said to tone down the in-your-face sexuality that Jane Fonda's version had and ramp up more of the adventure quotient.
