North American box office crosses $10 billion dollar mark
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Thursday, December 24, 2009
For the first time in box office history the film industry has earned more than $10 billion dollars from ticket sales.
The threshold was passed sometime on Tuesday. Already 2009's ticket sales had eclipsed last year record of $9.63 billion even though the number of major Hollywood releases was down.
The biggest grossing film of the year at present is Paramount's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, with $402 million dollars in domestic ticket sales. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is in second place with $302 million.
When combined, the domestic grosses of the year's top 10 films exceed $2.5 billion dollars.
