Nothing escapes from a Black Hole except remakes

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Monday, November 30, 2009

The creative team behind Disney's upcoming Tron: Legacy are falling into a remake of The Black Hole, the studio's then-mega-expensive 1979 sci-fi movie. Tron sequel director Joseph Kosinski and producer Sean Bailey are now attached to the new Hole along with screenwriter Travis Beacham, a man familiar with remakes since he penned Warner Bros.' new version of Clash of the Titans.

Back in the winter of 1979 Disney took a major gamble and released its first PG-rated movie ever, the $30 million dollar event called The Black Hole. Hoping to find a sweet spot in-between the sci-fi opera of Star Wars but the family friendly movies that Walt Disney was only known for (at the time), The Black Hole opened amid much hype and then proved to be a bomb at the box office. Starring Robert Forster, Yvette Mimieux and a scene-chewing Maximilian Schell, it told the story of a group of deep space explorers that come across the long-lost USS Cygnus floating on the edge of a black hole, the most destructive force in the known universe. After docking onboard the Cygnus, the explorers find the captain is still alive and he's replaced his missing crew with robots...but they're robots with a secret.

The Black Hole was a weird mix of scary concepts and cute robots...well, except for the evil captain's seven-foot-tall crimson tincan called Maximilian. For a movie marketed as a kids show, The Black Hole had some brutal on-screen deaths, a forboding atmosphere and an ending which literally took its audiences straight to Hell.

According to THR, the new Black Hole will choose to have a stronger science emphasis for its depiction of the energy devourer while also retain at least one robot from the original, that being Maximilian.

There's no ETA for when the Tron team want to have their trip in, through and beyond ready for audiences, but we're looking at likely three years from now, minimum.

And now, the trailer for the original movie (with voiceover from the same guy that did the voiceover for the Jaws trailer.)

I loved this movie as a kid. It was on TV a few weeks back and really hasn't aged well though.

Also one of my fav's too. The smaller robots were my favorites :)

Maximillian is still an awesome looking and sinister, quiet, robot. I hope they don't change that. Unfortunately, I fear a "Lost in Space" style of remake... hopefully, not.

I liked it. Not perfect, of course. You watch it now and it seems to have equal measure of cheese and genius. It would make an excellent hard-science fiction thriller if remade properly.

Some fine fellow has posted the entire movie on youtube if anyone's interested:
