Outland is headed to remake land

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Wednesday, August 19, 2009

If you know your science fiction films then chances are good if I ask you to name a movie where it's like High Noon but in space the answer I'll get back is Outland. Back in 1981 Sean Connery played a marshal stationed on a mining base on Jupiter's moon Io. A string of mining deaths ruled accidental or suicides led Connery's cop to uncover a conspiracy involving narcotics. When he takes a stand against the base's corrupt manager he finds that no one will side with him except a cranky medical officer. Connery then runs around inside and outside the station being chased by/hunting down two assassins that just arrived on the shuttle to kill him. It's not the best that Connery has done but Outland has it moments plus it did a decent job of showing people pop when exposed to zero atmosphere.

You know that the reason I'm telling you all this information isn't because Sean Connery is making Outland 2; no, Warner Bros. is remaking Outland and it's hired a director. The guy to call the shots is Michael Davis, director of Shoot 'Em Up which starred Clive Owen, Monica Bellucci and Paul Giamatti. The script will be written by Chad St. John who's done a project for the studio called The Days Before that has a great hook: aliens invade the Earth by conquering it traveling back through time, a day at a time. The new Outland also has some cred coming from Gianni Nunnari, the producer of 300 and the guy running the Hollywood Gang production company. "We loved the original sci-fi film with Sean Connery," Nunnari told Variety. "At its core, Outland is a version of High Noon in outer space, as two courageous people take a stand against a gang of ruthless conspirators at the highest level."

Variety also has a logline about the new Outland's plot. According to the trade the central character is still a space marshal and he's still stationed on a mining colony on Io. However, new to the mix is the old cliche that the cop is a week away from retiring and waiting to head back to Earth to be reunited with his wife. The moral decision Mr. Marshal faces betwene taking on the mining colony's bad guys is compounded by the fact that the only person who will help him is his ex-partner who also happens to be his wife's ex-boyfriend. That's sure adding some extra baggage to the storyline!

If you're interested here's the trailer for '81's Outland. You can definitely see the huge influence that Ridley Scott's Alien had on Outland's "lived-in" set dec and realistic look, and that's not all entirely due to the same composer (Jerry Goldsmith) and costume designer (John Rollo) having worked on both pictures.

while Sean's character wasnt one week shy of retiring in the original, he was headed home to meet his wife and son.. which got derailed and eventually he met up with them on the orbiting space station where they were waiting for a ride back to Earth.

now about his wife's ex-boyfriend being his partner? Hmmm.. nope... I still like the cranky angry medical officer from the original. She works well, give him insight, plays well against him and basically is a no bull medical officer who wants to fight against the assasins too.

its cliché to say that you're pairing up with your wife's ex-boyfriend because its pre-destined to bring even more un-needed conflict, trouble and turmoil into an already tense situation, its a recipe for disaster because it was written that way. Totally cliché.
