Piranha sequel in development
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Monday, August 23, 2010
When's the last time you saw a movie studio excited about one of its film's making $10 million dollars on its opening weekend? I'm guessing that it may have been a year that began with "19".
Dimension Films is excited enough with the positive buzz and eight digit showing of Piranha 3D that it's announced a sequel is in development. "We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving Piranha 3D, but cheering for it," said producer Mark Canton in a company issued press release. "And it's fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can't wait to get to work on the sequel."
Canton's talking about the positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes where the film currently stands with a 83% fresh rating. While Piranha 3D has lots of boobs and bites, one of the complaints that I've heard about it was the film's post-production 3D conversion. In other words, it's not a true 3D movie. But given that Piranha 3D will have a stellar run on home video, Dimension doesn't seem like it's too concerned about film nerds like me tut-tutting them.

It only cost $23m to make didn't it? So it made back nearly half it's budget on opening weekend as a hard R (Cert 18 in the UK) rated horror/comedy dumped into the deadzone of late August. No wonder they are talking sequel. This one will probably make a fortune on DVD/BluRay sales and rentals as well, especially when the "too sick for release" directors cut is on the disc.
Personally, loved it! Trashy, exploitative, camp fishy mayhem that harked back to the days when horror cinema could shock you and make you laugh at the same time without become a po-faced bag of torture wank like the Saw sequels or Hostel.
I am also firmly behind the idea that the world needs more Elisabeth Shue in it to become a better place, and that if there is an Oscar for 'Best Filling of a Bikini' then it already has Kelly Brook's name on it!
