Pirates director grabs a Clue

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Hollywood is taking a chance on a second feature film cased on Hasbro's Clue board game. Rolling the dice for Universal Pictures on this incarnation of the Clue movie is billion dollar director Gore Verbinksi, famous for crafting the three Pirates of the Caribbean films for Walt Disney Pictures.

Verbinski is working on the animated feature Rango for Universal, which features his Pirates leading man Johnny Depp as the voice of a pooch. However, that film won't be ready for another two years and in the meantime Verbinski seems like he's the kinda guy that needs to be busy, so he's attached to also make Bioshock for the same studio. That's supposed to be his next job and Clue will follow afterward.

Hasbro seems to be getting big into the movie-making game. After Hasbro executives smashed the palms of their hands against their brows when the first Transformers movie made $300 million domestic, they were all over getting a G.I. Joe movie in the development pipeline. Now they have both the Joe flick and the second Transformers movie coming out this summer and judging from the buzz I've seen Mr. G.I. Joe make make less than Optimus Prime and his pals but it'll still be good box office for both.

But that's not all that Hasbro has going on around the town. There was a Candy Land movie announced earlier this month, a Monopoly movie (with Ridley Scott developing it, no less), a movie based on their Ouija board game and a Stretch Armstrong movie going on too. So far Hollywood has mined books, old television shows, video games, board games and theme park rides for its movies. I go on record here and now that it is only a matter of time before crossword puzzles, commercials and the taglines from movies are optioned for feature film development.

Getting back on focus, the first Clue movie came out in theaters during the holiday season of 1985 and starred Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd and a hot Leslie Ann Warren as Miss Scarlet. It had the gimmick of being a movie with three different endings, with only one of the endings playing on one screen. The movie still bombed.

Haha, the original Clue is always good for some quick laughs and was well worth the $5 I paid for the DVD at Walmart. It'd be sweet if this one had alternate endings as well. That said, I highly await the Bioshock movie. Awesome game that I always thought would make a decent movie if done right, in a gritty dark style. And without shitty CGI Big Daddies...

I'm sure all those Hasbro movies will take over as the new Bottom Tier once Uwe Boll is finally banned forever.

well the saving grace with CLUE is that its relatively inexpencive to produce, hopefully they'll leave off the high price of CGI and get a good script and some decent actors... it should be fun to see Col. Mustard in the observatory..again...with the candlestick. ;)
