Promo: Agents of SHIELD

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, May 12, 2013

This weekend ABC announced that it had picked up Marvel's Agents of SHIELD as one of its' new fall series. I can't imagine anyone being surprised by the news, since The Avengers earned over a billion dollars at the box office and the film's director serves as the director of the pilot SHIELD episode.

The news would have made far more of an impact had ABC decided not to pick up the show.

In any case, ABC is slowly releasing more imagery and information about Agents of SHIELD. From the short premise the network has given, it sounds like Agents of SHIELD will be Marvel's version of The X-Files set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Clark Gregg reprises his Iron Man/Avengers role as Agent Phil Coulson. How Coulson survived being slain in The Avengers by Loki remains hidden, but with a guy like Joss Whedon serving as the creative shepherd behind Agents of SHIELD, I'm sure a worthy comic book-sounding resurrection/explanation will be given.

Coulson seems to be leading his SHIELD agents (Ming Na-Wen, Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge) to investigate, contain and protect the weird and strange. I'm expecting left-over alien tech from the Chitauri to factor into some of the show's stories as well as the many superpowered indivduals that inhabit Marvel's universe. In fact, if you can combat your ADD, when you watch the promo clip below you'll see a dude that leaps from a building to the street. To my eye the actor appears to be J. August Richards, one of the cast members from Whedon's earlier show Angel.

What I'll be interested in seeing happen in the series is how Whedon and his creative team will expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a weekly format. Sure, there's a ton of material that can be mined from Marvel's comics, but I highly doubt that we'll get to see most of the superheroes and supervillains. People like Doctor Strange, Luke Cage, the Thunderbolts, the Defenders, even Damage Control will likely never be seen in case Marvel/Disney want to make movies out of them. Still, if Whedon doesn't give us some heroes and villains then the geek-savvy of us will wonder why we're tuning in. I figure that Agents of SHIELD has about five or six episodes to hook us before the comic book savvy of us start to tune out.

I'm hoping that they find a way to make the show fun. Here's the brief promo ABC just began showing:

I am reasonably excited about this. I'll definitely tune in for a while and see how it goes.

We were watching Al-Quaeda, and all this time our security services should have been keeping watch on Jakester's throbbing nutsack!-Dalton's chin dimple
