Quentin Tarantino's top 20 films of the past 17 years

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Monday, August 17, 2009

As the final days tick down until the opening of Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds is upon us, Britain's Sky Movies channel got the director to program a week's worth of shows and also broadcast several interview segments with him including this one, a list of Q.T.'s top 20 movies from the past 17 years. Why 17 years instead of a more even number? Because it's been 17 years since Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs burst onto the scene and he made the move from a film fanboy to a working film professional, that's why.

I've assembled the list after the vid but the best way to understand Quentin's reasoning is by watching the vid. Some of his picks are pretty bizarre, like his favorite recent Woody Allen movie and Speed (Speed, really?), but to each his own I suppose. If I debated with him for an hour Tarantino could probably convince me of Speed being on that list.

Q.T.'s top 20 movies from the past 17 years:

1. Battle Royale

2-20:

Anything Else
Audition
The Blade
Boogie Nights
Dazed & Confused
Dogville
Fight Club
Friday
The Host
The Insider
Joint Security Area
Lost In Translation
The Matrix
Memories of Murder
Police Story 3
Shaun of the Dead
Speed
Team America
Unbreakable

Haven't watched the video, yet (at work), but I will say that, from watching past interviews, Tarantino strikes me as someone who is pretty honest about what he likes, which I can appreciate. I don't think he claims to like specific movies more than he actually does for the sake of impressing people, and I don't think he would declare his love for a "bad" movie for the sake irony, or for the sake of rounding out his favorites with something "quirky." He seems to me to be someone who's not afraid to like a movie he otherwise might not as long as there's an element in there somewhere that he considers to be strong.

Patrick:

You should probably edit the above so that the third movie reads The Blade. People might otherwise confuse it for the Wesley Snipes movie.

What, no Fahrenheit 9/11? I figured since he voted for it at Cannes....idjit...
