Whether it was the audience hungry for a family animated feature, the Johnny Depp factor or everyone likes geckos, Paramount's Rango debuted at the top spot at the box office this weekend.
Directed by Gore Verbinski, Depp's creative partner on the first trilogy of Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Rango netted a nice $38 million dollars over Friday to Sunday. But even with that accumulation of tickets sold Rango didn't even crack the top ten of movies that has a debut in March; that accomplishment is held by last year's Alice in Wonderland movie, another Depp vehicle.
Matt Damon brought them in to see The Adjustment Bureau on its opening weekend, grossing $20.9 million and giving Universal a nice second place movie to boast about.
In third spot is CBS Films with Beastly, the Alex Pettyfur/Vanessa Hudgens romantic/fantasy drama, with $10.1m.
Hall Pass drops to fourth spot in its second weekend with $9m in new ticket sales (for a cumulative total of $27m.)
With competition from Rango and three other newcomers, Gnomeo & Juliet had little choice but to tumble four spots to #5 ($6.9m new, $83.7m total.)
Liam Neeson is going to be asking for a bigger paycheck soon as Unknown continues to hold steady midway down the chart ($6.6m new, $53.1m total.)
After winning four Oscars a week ago, audiences found that they didn't care that much anymore for The King's Speech (#7, $6.5m new, $123.8m total.)
Columbia's Just Go with It is still hanging in there, like an old buddy at your 40th birthday party that hasn't realized things have died down and he shuld head home (#8, $6.5m new, $88.2m total)
The other Alex Pettyfur movie in the top ten is I Am Number Four. This week it is number nine ($5.7m new, $46.4m total.)
And finally we come to tenth place. Hello, Justin, and prepare to say goodbye from the top ten. Justin Bieber: Never Say Never grossed $4.3m this weekend to give the film a total domestic gross of $68.8m so far.
Next week: aliens invade in Battle: Los Angeles, aliens steal our world's most vital resource in Mars Needs Moms and Red Riding Hood ventures into the woods so dark and deep.
