When you can't convince Hollywood to make a Halo movie, do the commercial.
Halo: Reach is going to be one of this fall's big video game titles. Designed to show us the true start of the war with the deadly Covenant, the coalition of hostile alien races that serve as the enemy in the Halo trilogy of games, Halo: Reach is set on the planet where the war started. In the background mythology of the Halo universe, the planet Reach elicits the same emotional response for humanity that 9/11 does for New Yorkers, or Hiroshima to teh Japanese. It is a place that was annihilated, where tens of millions of men, women and children were attacked without warning, and where humans first encountered the might of the Covenant force.
Microsoft is ramping up the hype for the September 14 launch of Halo: Reach by releasing a series of commercials showing what life was like on the morning of July 23rd, 2552 across the planet Reach. There's not a single shot fired, nor are there any Covenant spaceships darkening the skies of Reach yet. However, if you've played Halo and remember the backstory about the fall of Reach then seeing the calm before the storm can give you a little chill running up your spine. A lot of people are going to die on Reach on this day and none of them know about it. Yet.
Yeah, it's just a video game but it's a nicely created ad that sets the mood. Good job, Microsoft.
