He was in Men in Black. Last night he shouldn't have been a man in a bank.
78-year-old actor Rip Torn, known to authorities now by his birth name Elmore Torn, walked into a Connecticut bank last night. Torn was carrying a loaded handgun and was drunk.
Police were called to the Litchfield Bancorp in Salisbury, Connecticut after an alarm sounded. Inspecting the perimeter of the building the officers discovered a broken window in the back. When they ventured inside they found Torn walking around inside the empty bank. Torn lives in the small town, so at least this bizarre story isn't as super-spectacular crazy as it could be.
Details as to why Torn thought that it'd be cool to break into a bank while blitzed out of his mind and packing a piece haven't surfaced yet. The actor is being held on a $100,000 bond and is due to appear in court this coming Monday morning facing charges of burglary in the first degree, criminal mischief in the third degree, carrying a firearm while intoxicated, trespassing in the first degree and possession of a firearm without a permit.
Torn was convicted two years ago on a 2007 driving while intoxicated charge and got off without any jail time by enrolling in a weekend substance abuse program. Guess that didn't help so much.
