Sci Fi Channel evolves into Syfy

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Monday, March 16, 2009

This summer the Sci Fi Channel is rebranding itself as Syfy. While the new network name is pronounced identically to the hyphenated word "sci-fi", the change reflects the channel's desire to expand beyond its science fiction programming base to include "fantasy, supernatural, paranormal, reality, mystery, action and adventure." What, no more wrestling shows?

"Without abandoning our legacy or our core audience, we needed to cultivate a distinct point of view with a name that we could own that invites more people in and recognizes our broader range of programming with literally something for everyone," said network president Dave Howe in a press release. "Syfy allows us to build on our 16-year heritage of success with a new brand built on the power that fuels our genre: the imagination. Syfy ushers in a new era of unlimited imagination, exceptional experiences and greater entertainment that paves the way for us to truly become a global lifestyle brand."

There are already some looking deeper into Sci Fi's -- I mean, Syfy's -- decision to rebrand its identity. One reason is that the term "sci-fi" is generic and can't be copyrighted while "Syfy" can be. It's a fact that wasn't lost on the broadcaster and they even mentioned their future intention to expand the name into "new adjacent businesses under the Syfy Ventures banner, including Syfy Games, Syfy Films and Syfy Kids."

The new name for the channel will officially debut in July with the launch of the network's new series Warehouse 13.

while Sci-Fi isnt able to be copywrited, i always thought "Sci-fi Channel" already WAS copywrited by the Sci-Fi channel.

and last saturday night's movie Corin Nemic's Sea Beast didnt do anything to inspire the imagination... it kinda sucked it dry.

SYFY kinda rhymes with Sly Fry or Sky Fly and it'll definitly take some getting used to.

This is only slightly less lame than ECW on Sci-Fi.
The only worthwhile thing this channel has to offer is BSG, and it's over on Friday. Yes, I'll check out Caprica, but again....ONE show.

More like devolves...this "new" name reeks of laziness. "We can't come up with a better name, so let's just spell the old one differently."

Besides, when I read SyFy, I hear "sifee" or "see-fee" in my head, not "sigh fie"

Somebody on another website posted about this topic, and I just had to steal a quote from them and post it here:

“Syfy” sounds like baby-talk for syphilis.

yes its tragic thats BSG is sailing off into the sunset on friday night and i have hopes of caprica although, without a robot race antagonist, it MAY seem that life on Caprica might be too much more of our favorite zipcode, 90210.

there are other shows GHI, Ghost Hunters, and Eureka (if its not axed) but yeah.. wrestling on Slyfry is plain stupid.

WHAT? no more HORROR related content? We'll always have Fearnet and The Horror Channel. fantasy, supernatural and paranormal all sound great but reality shows Mystery, Action and adventure seem strange to be on the Science fiction channel, I know they include Action/Adventure because they want to show Indiana Jones movies and i'm certainly not objecting to that. Their reality shows at least were grounded in Science fiction (the haunted Mantion game and the real life video game shows) its just that 1) the wrestling needs to go... this aint VS or a sports network and wrestling has absolutely nothing to do with sci-fi, their shows are cancelled ALL THE TIME, it seems like they have to take such a drastic step to dump wrestling from their lineup.

Oh, so . . . what? Are you calling Professional Wrestling a pig, now?! Is that what you're doing? You hate entertainment, now? Is that it, you communist? You're an entertainment hater? Huh?!
