If last night's early preview screenings of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek are any indication then the movie could be headed into warp speed on its opening weekend. Early receipts from theaters indicate that late night showings of the new Trek grossed $7 million dollars.
Last week X-Men Origins: Wolverine took in $5 million from its midnight showings and ended its first weekend with $85 million dollars from the box office. If Trek makes anywhere near what Wolverine made then it will be a win for Paramount; the highest opening weekend for any Star Trek film has been only $30.7 million made by Star Trek: First Contact in 1996. The highest-grossing Trek film is still Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home released in 1986 which netted $109.7 million domestic.
Estimates for the budget of 2009's Star Trek reboot come in between $120 to $150 million making it the highest-budgeted film in the franchise.

The only problem with comparing the Wolvie and Trek takes is that Trek was running more than just midnight shows yesterday. They started running at 7, and had at least 3 showings just here in my own little town.
If Wolvie did $5m from midnight, and Trek did $7m from more shows.........
Any screen-average numbers?
