Star Wars Blu-rays and the return of Luke Skywalker
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Monday, April 19, 2010
It was inevitable that sometime Lucasfilm would get around to confirming that a Blu-ray special edition of all six Star Wars movies is being worked on. That confirmation finally arrived this past weekend at the Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) from Steve Sansweet, the company's director of publicity.
Speaking to the audience at a Star Wars panel, Sansweet said (courtesy of IGN), "We have been at work for a couple of years working on—I won't call it the Ultimate Set because we keep finding stuff—but, a very full set of all six movies on Blu-ray with lots of extra material. We're finding all kinds of scenes from dailies that have never been seen before. Beyond all of those things that you know about… there are some real treasures." No ETA was given for when we would have to open up our wallets.
Coming Attractions first reported that Lucasfilm was working on a second special edition of Star Wars nearly a decade ago, one that would be presented in 3D and feature yet more edited material not seen in the original or Special Edition releases. During Sansweet's talk the 3D Star Wars was again mentioned along with the caveat that Lucasfilm is considering all of the post-release conversion 3D processes before committing to the project.
And on the Star Wars TV front Sansweet said that we should see the return of Luke, Han and Leia in their post-Return of the Jedi lives. Answering a fan's question the publicity man said that the characters will be back in "the new animation." That may be an indirect mention of the Star Wars animated comedy show just recently announced.
