Man, I'd love to see a great film from this property -- I never thought the comic versions lived up to the premise's promise -- but I can't see Justin Marks bringing it. His SUPERMAX / GREEN ARROW script was everything bad that people claim a "comic book movie" is. Maybe he was just saving it up for SS. But I doubt it. Dare I ask if anyone's had the guts to read his VOLTRON script? (I haven't, SUPERMAX was enough for me.)

Suicide Squad is the latest comic book to be plucked from DC Comics and developed as a feature film at Warner Bros. For those not up on what the Squad were, it was like The Dirty Dozen in the DC universe: a hand-picked bunch of captured supervillains get to commute time on their sentences by performing high-risk special ops for the government. Job openings were frequent since the attrition rate was high.
While the concept was created in 1959, it really found its fanbase in the late 1980s when Jon Ostrander was writing the second volume. Given their mission orders by government liason Amanda Waller, the Squad would go out and do what needed to be done. Because the group was comprised of lesser known villains readers never knew which character wouldn't be coming back home which resulted in some memorable storylines. Variety notes that the movie version will employ a similar approach to its storyline. Screenwriter Justin Marks (Voltron, Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li) has been hired to begin assembling the story. Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes) is producing.

Never read the comic but it definitely sounds cool.
