Survey finds Airplane! as the funniest film ever

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Monday, September 10, 2012

According to a survey done by the users of Lovefilm, the 1980 slapstick comedy Airplane! ranks as the funnest movie of all-time if you measure its value by laughs.

With an average number of three laughs per minute, the 88 minute comedy would generate 265 laughs from you, if you follow the site's methodology. According to Lovefilm's editors, just because Airplane! can make you laugh out loud so many times and so frequently, that doesn't make it the funniest movie of all-time.  Monty Python's Life of Brian would take the Lovefilm's title for that distinction.

Lovefilm figured out the score for each comedy by recording the number of times that a viewer would laugh at the joke on-screen. Then they divided the results by the running length of each movie to determine a "laugh per minute" score.

What may be more telling of the mindsets that went into the decision making process is that Life of Brian is the oldest movie to make it on the top 10 list. Released in 1979, Life of Brian came out in #10 with an average laugh ratio of 1.2 laughs per minute of screen time. Airplane! was the second-oldest movie on the list, released the following year but ranked at #1.

In fact, six of the top ten comedies on Lovefilm's list were of movies released in just the past 10 years. Here's what they were:

1. Airplane! - 3 laughs a minute

2. The Hangover - 2.4 Laughs A Minute

3. The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad ! - 2.3 Laughs A Minute

4. Superbad - 1.9 Laughs A Minute

5. Borat - 1.7 Laughs A Minute

6. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy - 1.6 Laughs A Minute

7. American Pie - 1.5 Laughs A Minute

8. Bridesmaids - 1.4 Laughs A Minute

9. Shaun of the Dead - 1.3 Laughs A Minute

10. Life of Brian - 1.2 Laughs A Minute

If there could be something else that could be gleaned from the top ten movies on the list, it's that Leslie Nielsen starred in two of the pictures (Airplane! and The Naked Gun), and that the comedy geniuses of David Zucker, Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams were involved in both films.
