Tarantino's Basterds assault the box office
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, August 23, 2009
Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds stormed theaters this weekend and emerged triumphantly atop of the box office. The World War II action movie that stars Brad Pitt as the leader of a group of Allied soldiers out to kill as many Nazis as they can within occupied France grossed an estimated $37.6 million dollars from Friday to Sunday, capturing the number one spot from last week's champ, District 9.
District 9 may have dropped down to second spot but it's still performing very well, falling just a little bit less than 50% from its opening weekend. The sci-fi action/drama earned an additional $18.9 this weekend bringing its total domestic gross up to $73.4 million. Made on a budget of just $30 million dollars, that's a pretty great return already on District 9 at this point.
In third position is Paramount's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra with $12.5 million in ticket sales for its third week out. That film has now crossed the $120 million dollar barrier domestically and just over the $100m mark internationally. A sequel is in development.
Another film that's holding ground is Warner Bros.' The Time Traveler's Wife. This is its second weekend in release and surprisingly it only tumbled 46% from its opening weekend take, netting an additional $10 million this weekend to bring its total gross to $37 million. That's about the same cost the movie cost for WB to make.
Fifth spot is take up by Columbia Pictures' Julie & Julia, down just 25% in its third week. Add another $9 million to its ticket sales to bring that film's total up to $59.2m and Julie & Julia has already earned back its budget and is now in the black.
In sixth place is Robert Rodriguez's new film Shorts which took in just $6.6 million in its opening weekend. Seventh spot is held by Disney's G-Force with $4.2m, a kid's movie that just crossed the $100 million dollar threshold this weekend. $3.5 million more was added to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince's total (now at $290m) and with another $2.8m for The Ugly Truth, it just passed the $80 million dollar mark. Finally, at tenth position is Fox Searchlight's Post Grad, a low-budgeted comedy/drama starring Gilmore Girls' Alexis Bledel as a freshly college graduate who gets a cold dose of realityt tossed into her career plans. The movie was directed by Shrek co-director Vicky Jensen.
