Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, June 28, 2009
According to preliminary box office returns Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen grossed an estimated $112 million dollars from Friday to Sunday, pushing its five day total to $201 million dollars and making it the second-highest grossing film to reach $200m after The Dark Knight.
Playing on 4,234 screens, the Transformers sequel netted a commanding $26K from each location.
In its second weekend the Sandra Bullock/Ryan Reynolds romantic comedy The Proposal fell just 45% from last weekend and grossed $18.4m. That brings the film's total gross up to $69 million dollars and minting it as a hit for its studio, Touchstone Pictures.
With another $17.2 million in ticket sales to land it in third spot, The Hangover's total b.o. is now standing at $183 million. It's presently the fifth-highest grossing picture of 2009.
In fourth place Disney's Up added another $13 million dollars to bring its total to $250 million; fifth spot went to Cameron Diaz's new drama My Sister's Keeper which opened to $12 million dollars; and in sixth place was Year One which dropped a huge 70% from last weekend's opening. The Jack Black/Michael Cera comedy could only muster up $5.8 million in ticket sales, bringing its total gross to just $32 million. Sony's The Taking of Pelham 123 is in seventh place ($5.4m new / $53.4m total), in eighth position was Paramount's Star Trek ($3.6m new / $246.2m total), ninth place Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian ($3.5m new / $163.2 total) and in tenth spot was Focus Features' Away We Go which expanded its run and drew in $1.6m (for a total of $4 million dollars so far.)

Too bad it was such a crap movie. I was really looking forward to it too. The first half actually isn't bad, but in the second half it's like the movie hit a patch of wet cement and got stuck. That whole scene where
Sam is running to get the matrix to Optimus in the desert
was waaaay too long. Some characters just disappeared towards the end (the Minstrel Show Twins, that annoying government suit they dropped out of the plane, the little Decepticon that humped Mikaela's legs, etc). Lot of good ideas, badly directed. Bay sure does know how to blow shit up though!
