Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a hit in the same way that an atomic explosion is a kind of boom.

In the film's opening day Revenge of the Fallen grossed an estimated $60.6 million dollars across North American cinemas. That easily shatters the prior record holder for best Wednesday opening ever, 2007's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which made $44.2 million on its first day out. Revenge of the Fallen also came close to having the best opening day ever, $67.2 million attained last year by The Dark Knight. And when you compare Transformers 2 opening day with 2007's Transformers, there's a big difference: the first movie only grossed $8.8 million on its opening day (a Monday) and $27.8 million on its best day in release (the next day, Tuesday). The sequel also made $1 million from IMAX screenings early Wednesday morning, attaining another record.

Now comes the wait to see if Revenge of the Fallen can also beat the five-day record for box office currently held by Spider-Man 2 ($152.4 million). Most box office forecasts predict that it will.
