The Walking Dead plod on to AMC

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Wednesday, August 12, 2009

Rights to Robert Kirkman's survival horror zombie drama comic book The Walking Dead have been sold to AMC, the cable channel behind Mad Men, with the intent of turning the bestselling Image comic book into an ongoing series. Filmmaker Frank Darabont (The Mist, The Shawshank Redemption) will write and direct the pilot episode as well as executive produce the series. Gale Anne Hurd (The Incredible Hulk) and David Alpert (Senseless) are executive producing.

Kirkman's black-and-white series made its debut in 2003 and immediately established a loyal and large following amongst comic book readers. The story begins about one month after a zombie outbreak takes place. Civilization has fallen and former sheriff Rick Grimes tries to keep a band of survivors safe from the undead, those living that preying on the weaker, the elements and the threat of starvation. Story arcs of the series have been collected into trade paperbacks and could easily be used as a template for a season's worth of episodes.

"These are two world-class filmmakers who are also brilliant storytellers with experience in the fantasy genre," said Joel Stillerman, AMC's senior executive in charge of programming. "This is not about zombies popping out of closets. This is a story about survival, and the dynamics of what happens when a group is forced to survive under these circumstances. The world is portrayed in a smart, sophisticated way."
