Wanted sequel hires someone experienced with Pooh
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Friday, April 17, 2009
Universal is moving forward on crafting a sequel to Wanted by hiring screenwriter Evan Spiliotopoulos to fire up his word processor and start staring at a blank screen. The part that I find amusing is Spiliotopoulos' past credits considering that Wanted was an ultra-violent R-rated film. Ready to find out what this fellow has done before?
Pooh's Heffalump Movie. Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie. The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning. Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure (coming out this fall). Tinker Bell: A Midsummer Storm. See a trend forming?
It's not that I don't believe a writer can't write for one genre and not another but I've also been around enough to know that Hollywood has a tendency to stick with safe choices and let's face it, writing the screenplay for Pooh's Heffalump Movie usually wouldn't give a studio executive reason to hire that writer to write a franchise follow-up that involves heavy gunplay, swearing, numerous murders and probably some mild T&A. Evan, I don't know how the heck you landed this job but good on you for breaking out of your mold!
Spiliotopoulos isn't going into the writing of Wanted 2 completely blank; he's working from a story idea generated by Chris Morgan, the co-writer of the original Wanted. Timur Bekmambetov is attached to direct the sequel but for sure he's got a producing credit if the Russian decides to move away from continuing the adventures of Wesley Gibson and the Fraternity.

Actually, sounds like he was a contracted Disney writer working in their in-house shop churning out Disney-approved fare. Usually it's a gig that lasts a couple of years, during which you make the contacts necessary to have a more free-wheeling career. I expect and hope that's the case.
Besides, can you imagine the build-up of anger and angst that can be generated by a few years working for the Mouse?
