Watch 4 minutes from Green Lantern

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Saturday, April 2, 2011

Those lucky souls attending this weekend's WonderCon 2011, Warner Bros. just previewed 4-and-a-half minutes of footage from their upcoming summer superhero flick Green Lantern. For fans of the emerald hero, like myself, who haven't been blown away from the first trailer, the good news is that this new footage delivers the cosmic adventure and weird alienness found in the Green Lantern comic books.

In the preview you'll hear Geoffrey Rush speak as the birdlike Green Lantern Tomar-Re. You'll also see and hear Mark Strong all CG'ed up as another of Hal Jordan's Corps mentors, the red-skinned Sinestro. You'll hear Ryan Reynolds deliver the Green Lantern oath, and you'll see brief shots of the film's yellow energy antagonist, Parallax.

Warner Bros. knows who they are marketing to with this material, the geek savvy crowd that know who Green Lantern is. That's why there's no play-up of the romantic attraction between Hal and Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), or any of that Top Gun test pilot vibe you got from the first trailer. Finally, we're presented what GL fans wanted to see: Star Wars with a superhero.

Watch the footage on Apple's trailer website.

At first, I thought maybe I was had been tricked into watching footage from a video game adaptation of the movie.  I've had that happen before with other movies/video games.  This time the trailer was only tricking me into thinking I had been tricked.  Very clever, 'Green Lanten' trailer.  If I had to pick the upcoming big budget comic book movie to fail at the box office, I think I would pick this one.  Has some cool visuals, though.

The CG looks like it's laid on pretty thick. I think that's partly because of Reynolds' CG costume. Maybe the makers thought that having his costume would make us buy into the other CG'd Lanterns.

AVATAR really set the benchmark for a realistic CG world and creatures. GREEN LANTERN the movie looks like video game cut scenes.

That said, I dig that they're including the weirdness of GL aliens. The eyeball Lantern and the jellyfish Lantern were nice touches. I'm sure that Mogo the living planet will be in there, somewhere.

No matter where you go, there you are.

Patrick, DC Comics animation showed off GL:Emerald Knights straight after this panel and Mogo appears there in a short story as does Chip the GL Squirrel.... while he wasnt shown in this trailer, i'm sure he'll appear in the movie in some fashion. I thought the CGI for GL looked pretty good, not sure exactly what you man by "video game cut scenes" because they definitly do not look crappy at all... i mean sure you can tell that Ryan's mask is CGI but as Geoff Johns stated in the panel, the suit is made from pure energy and there was no way to convey that thought if they used an actual Green Lantern costume like the Spiderman outfit.

I'll still see it opening day... i'm not into Green Lantern mythos but i heard that they stuck extremely close to the comics origin and didnt straight too far from established mythos.

I'll go see the movie as long as there aren't any one-liners in it.
