What Wired monster is slithering from the mind of Neill Blomkamp?

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, November 23, 2010

A curious discovery has been found secreted away in the latest iPad version of Wired magazine. Just before the article about Tron Legacy in the latest issue of the technology lifestyle magazine's e-version, the mysterious video seen below shows up. While the video's hook itself plays on the found footage of a monster trope made popular by Cloverfield, Paranormal Activity and The Last Exorcism, it's the director that's credited that may be the most curious aspect to the short film: it was made by District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp.

The film is only a minute long. It shows two men pulling into a deserted looking field and finding a small, unusual looking creature half-sunk into a pool of muddy water. The animal is dead but it's clearly not any kind of beast that can be identified with a weird, pug-like mouth, strands of coarse black hair running down its back, a long tail and what looks like more than a dozen legs, all shrinking in size. Strangest of all is the inked brand on the animal's side "18.12" and "AGM Heartland" can be made out in the writing. The short then ends with a shot of an industrial-looking plant off in the distance. Perhaps the origin of the creature?

So is this a viral video meant to promote a new upcoming found footage movie or something else? Slashfilm's Peter Sciretta, who was the first online movie webmaster to be tipped off to the existence of the video, did some digging and found some curious correlaries:

  • A trademark for "AGM Heartland" was taken out on October 18, last month, by a Beverly Hills company called Sable Productions.
  • 18.12, the number on the side of the beast, coincidentally also happens to be the issue number designation of the Wired magazine the video appears with.

So is this proof that Neill Blomkamp is working on a Super-8-like monster movie of his own? Maybe, but it could also be a project that will only exist online. Nevertheless, the video exists to promote something, and that something, whether it's a movie, TV show, online series or what-have-you, is still unknown.

And although I can't prove it, my gut tells me that this short film was shot up here in my neck of the woods, in Vancouver. At the start of the film you can see a brief glimpse of mountains in the distance, and the scenery looks like someplace in the back roads of Delta, Surrey, Ladner or Richmond, all outlining cities within the Greater Vancouver area. Plus, Blomkamp lived here, graduating from Vancouver Film School. Many of the District 9 team also hail from Vancouver.
