Wolverine's weekend origin claws up $87 million
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, May 3, 2009
At least 20th Century Fox can rest assured that, leaked workprint or not, people will still go out and pay to see an event movie in theaters. X-Men Origins: Wolverine drew audiences to the tune of $87 million dollars in its opening domestic weekend, giving the spinoff film bragging rights for the top film at the start of the summer blockbuster season.
Even with mixed reviews and the spectre of lost ticket sales thanks to the leaked copy on the net, Wolverine performed very well and took in an average of $21K per screen. Compared to other films in the X-Men movie franchise Wolverine ranks second after X-Men: The Last Stand's $102 million dollar opening in May 2006 and ahead of X2: X-Men United's $85m 2003 debut. The highest grossing X-Men film was the third picture with $234m net.
Jennifer Garner and Matthew McConaughey's romantic comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends Past rustled up $15.3 million in its opening weekend, a fair amount for its counterprogramming mandate. The romantic thriller Obsessed dropped from first to third and added an additional $12.2m to its cumulative gross ($47 million to date.) The weekend's other new releae, the animated sci-fi action film Battle for Terra, faired dismally against Wolverine and could only gross $1 million and change on a quarter of the amount of screens that Wolverine is playing on.
