The Wonder Woman movie that never was

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Wednesday, July 7, 2010

Hollywood mega-producer Joel Silver has been trying to develop a Wonder Woman movie for the better part of a decade now. We know that Warner Bros. has been turning up the heat on getting their superhero properties greenlighted but for some reason, and even with solid talent working on a WW movie, nothing has made it to the point of getting a greenlight.

A couple of years back it was Joss Whedon's turn at bat for Wonder Woman. After his stint creating Buffy the Vampire Slayer had ended, Whedon was hired by Silver Pictures and Warner Bros. to write a Wonder Woman screenplay. You think that with a guy like Whedon working on Wonder Woman that something great would materialize, right? Something may have but it still wasn't enough to sell the top WB brass on bucking up for the movie.

We've heard bits and pieces from Whedon on why his take on the Amazonian princess didn't happen but now we've finally gotten to see what Wonder Woman might have looked like in her movie. Costume designer Shawna Trpcic sketched out some costume ideas for the Wonder Woman movie and last weekend she took a couple of photos of them and posted the links via her Twitter feed. In all there are four different costume sketches, the first here and the second here.

With Wonder Woman's recent makeover in her comic book attracting big sales and attention Trpcic's visual take on the character may be another of those approaches that we'll never get to see in the movie, if and when the Wonder Woman movie ever does finally happen.

[Thanks to Sci Fi Wire for the heads up.]

Design 1: High heels are already impractical, and making them over-the-knee is just plain brutal. The slit-side mini just seems whorish.

Design 2: Hm. Is that "Trenchcoat Mafia" Wonder Woman, or just "Matrix Wonder Woman"?

Design 3: Low-ride leggings stuffed into the same bad boots, and belts that go inside the leggings? Or is that the Golden Thong of Truth? Her bracelets stretch all the way from wrist to elbow, like she's busted out of some bondage device. In fact, that whole pose makes her look like she's chained to a wall.

Design 4: The last one is more 90s than the actual Jim Lee redesign, with buckles and kneepads and...spaghetti straps? At least the boots are practical here.

Sorry, but these are costume fails.
