Work-in-progress Wolverine movie leaked onto internet
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, March 31, 2009
30 days before the premiere of X-Men Origins: Wolverine a work-in-progress cut of the movie has been leaked onto the internet.
The cut that is now being shared on torrents is an incomplete version of the film. In many scenes the CG effects haven't been fully completed, wires remain to be digitally erased from stuntpeople and sound effects haven't been enhanced or included. Additionally the additional material that was shot in December and January is not in this cut. It's believed that the new material shot last winter amounts to about 15 to 20 minutes of additional footage that will be in the final cut of the picture. While the leaked movie is in rough form the quality of the image is at least as good as standard DVD. That suggests it came from an inside source privy to working on X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Right now no one knows where the illegal copy came from or how it came to be downloaded on the net. 20th Century Fox has not issued any statement about the leaked movie.
Fine, so I watched it.
It has its problems. I doubt anyone suspected otherwise. Some could be fixed, some probably won't be.
In short (the last two are light spoilers):
+ Logan is, apparently, a really great guy who cries when is sad and is sad a lot.
+ Will.i.am is not an actor.
+ I hate fat suits.
+ Ryan Reynolds is wasted (by which I do not mean he is drunk).
+ Gambit's fine, I suppose. Accent-wise, they opted for Country Boy over Creole.
+ I never really connected with the movie as it was presented to me. That said, I am curious to see the final cut.
+ Danny Huston sounds like his dad.
+ Clark Kent's going to be pissed when he finds out what Stryker had done to his parents. What they were doing living on the outskirts of the Canadian wilderness is beyond me, though.
+ The big surprise guest star at the end isn't much of a surprise.
I am taken to understand that there is an additional 20 minutes or so of footage that was shot and incorporated into the film that is NOT in this workprint.
Wolverine is one of the coolest Marvel characters, and I really like how Jackman plays him, yet I have no burning desire to go see this movie. I'm sure I will at some point, see it, but honestly, I'd rather see the young Magneto movie.
Hugh Jackman is as much Wolverine in this as he has been in the past. There aren't any real bezerker rages, but he's good. Ryan Reynolds is good. Liev Schreiber, too, is decent. There's a moment between him and Wolverine toward the end that is very manufactured, but still effective.
That's good to know.
Oh, and if anyone is considering snagging this on the torrents, I'd be careful. You can bet that TPTB are going to be watching traffic very carefully, and even things like PeerGuardian only offer a modicum of protection. You really need to know what you're doing to anonymize yourself. Remember, they're not going to bust you for downloading it. They'll bust your for distributing it, which you *must* do if you use bittorrent. Be careful out there, Kiddies.
You can set your upload limit to 1 kbps, which doesn't halt it completely. (It also slows your download rate, I think.) I'd recommend deleting it from your torrent list as soon as it's finished, if you're paranoid. There's always a risk. Less risk is involved in RapidShare and MegaUpload downloading. Now that so many folks have a copy of it, it will start showing up on them. If the movie's full title isn't showing up on your RapidLibrary or MegaDownload searches, try the old acronym and reverse acronym trick (XMOW/WOMX). The only problem with downloading it from MegaUpload or RapidShare is catching it before Warner Bros. bitches and the files are removed due to "term violations."

I started torrenting. Then I decided against it. It's not like I am frothing at the mouth for the movie.
