Writer zapped for Short Circuit remake
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Thursday, June 4, 2009
The remake of the 1986 sci-fi family comedy Short Circuit had another component installed in it today with the hiring of writer Dan Milano. The Robot Chicken/Greg the Bunny writer will be "Bringing Number 5 into the 21st Century and taking advantage of the improvements in robotics that are so massive that robots are now performing heart surgeries in hospitals," said Short Circuit producer David Foster.
Foster also produced the original movie which starred David Guttenberg as a military robotics genius whose latest battlefield creation gets struck by lightning and becomes self aware. But instead of going all Skynet and wanting to kill humanity, Number Five (as the robot is called) is a kind-hearted guy with honorable intentions. Ally Sheedy and Fisher Stevens co-starred in the movie which was a modest hit at the box office that year and had a top 40 pop song ("Who's Johnny?" by El DeBarge.)
Foster is hoping that the raunchier humor of Milano will add some zip to the G-rated comedy found in the original. He's also no dummy and knows that a certain G-rated Disney film from last summer can probably help his remake find its audience. "We think of WALL-E as an extended trailer for our film, because it's the same face," the producer told Variety.
Now, let's time travel back to the summer of 1986 and see what would have been on MTV at the time...
