You will believe that a starship can fly underwater
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Wednesday, December 30, 2009

As we wind down the final moments of 2009 the scarcity of news stories is itself becoming a news story. Thankfully the team at Sci Fi Wire haven't loaded up on champagne yet: they found a pleasing YouTube video made by a group of niche Japanese modelbuilders that take flying to a whole new level.
The Starfleet Yokosuka Drydocks team made a replica model of the refitted Constitution class Enterprise from the first six Star Trek films. Sure, the model looks absolutely faithful to the big screen version right down to its running lights, but where the Yokosuka gang made their true impact is by outfitting their Enterprise with real thrusters and then putting it into a large swimming pool. The result is a "flying" Enterprise, one that can bank and rise because of its aquatic environment. It's a kinda restful feeling to watch their watership fly around inside the pool.
Now if the Yokosuka team can build a Reliant model and then outfit both Federation starships with laser pointers they can reenact Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
