Rob Zombie calls Hollywood a "scared town"

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Saturday, October 31, 2009

As a horror film director heavy metal rocker Rob Zombie has four films notched in his belt: House of 1,000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects, the 2007 remake of Halloween and this summer's sequel, Halloween II. He's also developing a remake of the 1950s monster movie The Blob. When Zombie's Blob remake was announced there was some criticism heard, especially from the quarter that prefer John Carpenter's Halloween to the newer one, that Zombie was obsessing with remakes. Now Rob's said something surprising to CNN about the state of the film business in Hollywood: that they don't want original ideas, they want remakes.

"I have lots of original ideas that maybe will get made," Zombie told the news outlet. "But everyone ... even if you bring them the most obscure movie that nobody's ever heard of -- they want to remake that."

Zombie has another original concept in development about a boxer named Tyrannosaurus Rex who gets mixed up in the underground fight circuit. "But, unfortunately, I don't run Hollywood, so I kind of have to look at what's there and go, 'Well, OK, this is how they want to do things and I want to make movies.'"

When confronted with the fact that he's done both original films as well as remakes, he said, "I try to do what I tried to with Halloween -- take something and as much turn it into my own thing as possible."

Zombie's Halloween II is getting re-released this weekend on 1,000 screens to grab some bucks from the weekend crowd looking for an appropriately themed movie to see in theaters.

What ticks me off about Zombie is that he's been saying this for two years, Patrick..That the only way to get films made is to do remakes and sequels. When asked a year ago about coming back to do Halloween 2 and why Tyrannosaurus Rex fell apart, he said this same reasoning.

And yet, we have people in the industry who always find ways to get their movies made with enough hard work behind it.

The Kevin Smiths...The Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino (in their early years)...The John Carpenters and George Romero's.

If you really want your "original" movie made, you can do it. And Rob Zombie's name is enough that he should be able to receive indie financing.

Instead, he goes back on tour and accepts "The Blob" remake while announcing that he doesn't really like what makes the Blob...well, the Blob.

When he was announced as the director attached to remake the Blob, he actually came out and said he didn't like the cheesy factor revolving around the monster...Which is what that movie is all about.

Sheesh, Mr. Zombie. If you didn't like the whole essence of what makes the Blob special, why take on the job? For the paycheck? Okay...

He should understand that there are financing out there to make those indie horror movies he wants to make. When they're saying no to him, they're really saying no to more "White Trash" crap.

1988's remake of The Blob wasnt cheesy (I would like a direct sequel to that one) and I think Rob actually has a point that the Original Blob hasnt aged well AT ALL (is this akin to saying its cheesy?) I dont know.

there are ways of making a flesh eaing blobby substance from outer space not suck... of course there are ways of making Werewolf Women of the SS not suck too... and lets face facts, while we're talking about Tyranosaurous Rex the logistical problem of NAMING your movie after a dinosaur and then NOT featuring said dinosaur anywhere in your movie or not making a movie about a T-Rex is indeed cause for concern. I have long thought that this flick needed a title change big time.

I dont think Hollywood wants to remake obscure films that nobody has ever heard of. Halloween wasnt obscure and neither is The Blob, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm St., Tx Chainsaw Massacre, Hills have Eyes, Last house on the left, Poltergiest, Escape from New York

I mean good lord if you want obscure why dont you remake something from the 20's or 30's that isnt sitting on a DVD shelf at Blockbuster video!!

In the Blob we will se a fast Blob. Like fast Zombies. This is about all you got. Other than that he is working on 98's "Phantoms". I have a suspicion that is what we will see from him. With his wife in it. I can already tell you I will wait for the DVD of this like I am his H2.

Let me add... Rob you’re a hack. The Road, Avatar, Book of Eli, the Box, Zombieland, and on and on and on I can go with things that are not direct remakes. You could also if you had a talent for it like the creators and directors behind those projects. Your shit just does not make money. Because of that no one will give you any money to take outside there comfort zone. It’s not so much them as it is you. I blame you man. Go back to Indie Horror movies and start doing some shit and all this can change dude.

um actually The Box IS a remake, but not from a movie, it's actually a 30 minute episode from the Alfred Hitchcock Presents show from ...when was Amazing Stories and Alf on...1984?

and actually his "shit" does make money, his budgets are never over-inflated like Avatar and he keeps costs under control... I think halloween 2 was his first flick that nobody really watched or cared about.

I still like watching House of a 1000 Corpses and The Devils Rejects is still a fun flick to watch but I was really hoping he would make Werewolf Women of the SS first before any of his other movies. I dont beleive he's a hack, he definitely knows how to direct a decent horror flick its just that by now he should have evolved into a "respectable" (or bankable) horror director and he really hasnt done that yet so really all he's whining about.

Rob Zombie needs to hook up with The Weinstein Company. CadderlySoaring, those directors you named - Tarantino, Rodriguez, Smith - all got their foot in the door through Harvey and Bob. Arguably, Rodriguez got his start through Tarantino.

The Weinsteins have a track record of taking risks and coming out shining. But they really are the exception that proves the rule.

Zombie is falling into a standard Hollywood hole: Typecasting. He's the dark, scary guy on stage, makes Ozzy Osborne videos, then made a few horror movies. If he walked into a studio heads office and said "I have this great take for a new kid-target fantasy movie, and it can be PG rated and it will make a ton of toys and merchandising money" he'd almost certainly be told "shut up, here's a bag of money and script for 'The Blob'".

Personally, if they want to do a remake of anything AND have Rob Zombie involved AND (if he wants to) wants it to be other-than-horror, I say get Brad Garrett contracted and locked in, then have Zombie knock out his script for "The Munsters".

hell, even a Zombie directed The Addams Family would be good.

Nah, I don't think he'd do Addams Family. He's a Munsters fan (note the title of one of his biggest hits - Dragula!) and he tends to play the Munsters theme on stage.

I think he'd be fan-damn-tastic leading a Munsters flick!
